The Buzz

"Jewel of Peru took me on an adventure from page one. Sharon Skretting has captured Peru and deftly woven elements of the culture and geography into a fast-paced treasure hunt. It was well written, entertaining and introduced me to new ideas. I loved making little discoveries along the way about the people and places. I found some of the features of Peru so interesting, I looked them up the Internet and was delighted to find things just as she described. Fact and fantasy blend seamlessly in this delightful tale." ~ Sara Marschand, Quiethouse Copy Editing

"Engaging and meaningful, the author does an excellent job crafting this story. I don’t usually read middle school novels but made an exception for this one and will be passing it on to all the children in my life." ~ 5 Star Review, Love Reading, Amazon
"The Jewel of Peru is a wonderful piece of educational fiction that blends fact and fantasy to create a literary journey that is both informative and exciting for young readers... It's every bit as much of a page turner as it is a learning experience..." ~ 5 Star Review, Kelley, Amazon

excerpt

Chapter 1

As the slaver’s caravan rolled along, the wagon in which Glaurakos was held bumped and jostled wildly. The make of the transport was clearly designed for security, not comfort. It was enough to send someone with poor balance toppling to and fro. He was in a different world from the chaotic realm he’d escaped, but the confinement… that was familiar. The terrain was rough, following the road less travelled along the path from Sho’ar into the smaller trading camps. It was also more private, which was what the slavers needed. Glaurakos could see the thick forest as they slowly made their way past it, the hot sun beating down on them. It didn’t bother him, though. An odd mix of the beautiful and the terrifying, Glaurakos was born a Fae-Demon. His elven blood manifested in his bright, golden hued skin, handsome facial features and orange-gold hair that fell down around his back and shoulders, straight and silken-smooth. The other half of him was that of a hellish demon, with massive back-swept horns, leathery bat-like wings, glowing red eyes, sharp teeth, clawed fingers and six-and-a-half-foot height. He was a rare beast on the surface world, a prize for any slaver smart enough – or stupid enough – to try to capture. He was not bound in the caged wagon, but he was kept there alone, and a crisscross of metal mesh kept him from summoning his sword to him and fighting back against his captors. The damnable humans knew what a price they could fetch for him, and they hungered for it. Any demon, even a half-breed, fought with mastery in battle that a human could never obtain. Glaurakos seethed as he plotted his escape. It had been a while since the newest addition had been added to the caravan: a beautiful winged woman who was chained to the back of the caravan, but a few feet from him. She was walking with her head down, following closely after the wagon. Her slender form looked even smaller against the manacles around her hands, their enchantments no doubt keeping her from casting spells. These slavers weren’t the usual, trading in grunt workers. They were seeking the big wins. She looked to be an angel with her large, feathery wings and her delicate features. An innocent, someone easily manipulated and trusting. Even for a fiend like him. She was tall and svelte. Her body was naturally slim, but she looked like she had recently shed some weight, leaving her cheeks a tad more hollow than usual. She tried her best not to move her manacled hands to draw any further attention to herself. Her wings were bound behind her, the tips pressed together painfully, enough to cause a constant cringe to taint her otherwise attractive face. Her porcelain white skin was framed by a black shock of hair, and he had no doubt that this was how she looked at her worst. These slavers were exceptionally clever, or terrifically lucky, to have found and captured two of the rarer species of humanoids around. The slavers spread out after a time, keeping a wide sentry on the moving caravan. He managed to fight them off before they could shed him of his thick and intricate armour, a series of chest and leg plates with a short cloak draped about his shoulders and back. Perhaps they figured that once they got him to their destination they could better steal his earthly goods. He had to act fast, and Glaurakos shifted to move onto his knees. “Angel. I can break us free if you help me,” he whispered, his voice preternaturally deep and raspy. There was a terrifying sense of command that permeated his words, not by practice, but by natural inheritance. Lilah raised her freshly bruised eyes to him, clearly having taken a couple of blows in the struggle to get her to go with the slavers. Her expression was sour and cruel, though it brightened at his promise. She glanced around at her surroundings briefly with her eerie, green eyes. “What do you figure?” she asked, her voice nearly ethereal, a practiced combination of sweet and tantalizing with an undertone of hidden promise. “They haven’t stripped me of my magic. They think me a mere warrior,” he grinned, baring his sharply fanged teeth slyly. “But without help outside, my spells are useless. So…” He paused, some reluctant doubt tingeing his voice as though he didn’t expect her to agree to his plan. “With your agreement, I will shift us, summon my sword and free us to escape to safety.” She averted her eyes from him, keenly on the lookout for any who may notice her speaking to him. “What do you need me for?” she asked. Her voice was skeptical, but still filled with hope. “These bars prevent me from magically passing through,” he rasped, licking his lips briefly with his bizarrely pointed tongue. “However, with a spell I could switch our places. It’s not the same, you see? An eventuality they are not likely to have prepared for.” He smirked mischievously at her. “Once I’m outside this wagon, I will be able to get us out of here without issue. They only caught me by dumb luck in the first place. So, what say you?” His large, leathery wings twitched upon his back anxiously. He had not nearly enough room to unfurl them. She opened her plush lips to argue before shutting them. Whether she was chained helpless to the wagon, or captured within, there were few options for escape. She looked at him for as long as she’d dared before her eyes flicked away from his harsh gaze. “If you leave me, I will find you,” she said finally, jutting her jaw in annoyance at the reluctant and tentative agreement. “I know my way from here.” Pursing his lips for a moment, he smiled widely, giving her a stern nod. “I will free you,” he said, eyeing her wings. “Do they work still? Or did they just bind them? I want to know before I try to free us. Things will move fast once I’m out, I don’t have time to figure out how to break your chains once we start.” “They are bound without magical means. Though I will need to be freed of it before I can fly,” she replied. Glaurakos nodded sternly. “Chain or leather straps?” “Leather. I’d do it myself if I had time. I don’t imagine I will, if you’re able to do this.” “Get ready,” he said with finality. His voice was preternaturally rich and deep that everything he said sounded commanding and authoritative. Glaurakos stood as well as he could in the caged wagon, focused and determined as he prepared his gambit. It was a fairly simple spell, but required her consent to be dragged through the ether. Without further delay he muttered the profane words.

rebelsbanner

perf5.500x8.500.inddTHE REBEL WITHIN (264 pages)
Action packed first book in Rebel series.
Annabelle (16) faces adult dilemmas and a fight for her life. Orphaned at age three when the military took her parents, she’s a tomboy who rebels against her conformist society, which pushes her to become a cop intern to catch escaped boys. Then she’s forced to choose between joining the elite military that took her parents or being torn from her beloved sister and adoptive mom.
The Rebel Within turns our male dominated world upside down. After the Second American Civil War, the Federal Union pursues a utopian society without men by rounding up the remaining males, and enforcing Harmony. Central to their plan is EggFusion Fertilization and Female Mechanized Warriors.
In this world, Annabelle faces a cop intern boss who hates her, a military commander who demands too much, and an amazon bully who won’t leave her alone. She meets a handsome boy who escapes prison. As she tries to survive rigorous military training and hunt for her imprisoned birth mother, Annabelle must choose between capturing the boy and helping him escape, while she wrestles with the consequences of her actions.

perf5.500x8.500.indd THE REBEL TRAP (259 pages)

Voices in 16-year-old Annabelle’s head aren’t God or signs she’s going mad—yet.
The Rebel Trap sweeps readers into a haunting world with no privacy. Written as a standalone story, it also follows Annabelle’s adventures from The Rebel Within.
Auditory implants and contact cams allow her military commander from the unit that took her parents to watch her 24-7. A boy she helped to escape hacks her implants to plead for her help. She’s forced to be a cop and military spy investigating her police captain as well as capturing escaped boys. Observed constantly, Annabelle has to dance between helping the escaped boy she likes free his brother from a heavily guarded geek institute, her job to capture him, and the feud between her military commander and the police chief she’s expected to spy on.

A pawn in a bigger game, no one believes she can handle this, which may be her greatest asset.

perf5.500x8.500.inddREBELS DIVIDED (286 pages)
Rebels Divided is a fun thrill ride written as a standalone action story, but also part of the Rebel series, three years later.

The first time Geo sees Annabelle, they meet as enemies and she doesn’t kill him. That’s worth something. Geo (19) is a rugged frontiersman who hungers to see more of the world than the impoverished Outland glen where he and his pa hide from local Rangers. Annabelle (19) is a tough yet fragile tomboy who lost her parents at age three to the Mech Warriors. Then she’s forced to become a Mech.

After the Second American Civil War, the nation divides into two ‘utopias’. The Federal Union enforces Harmony and an all-female society protected by Mechanized Warriors. The Outland promotes rugged individualism, but Thane Edwards holds a monopoly of power with his Rangers. The Union’s Tenn-tucky governor and the Outland warlord conclude a secret deal, pledging Annabelle to the warlord to provide heirs, and putting a bounty on Geo and his pa.

Hunted by military from both sides, Geo and Annabelle struggle to overcome mutual distrust in order to work together to rescue her sister and gain justice for the murder of his father.

Lars Guignard's Zoe & Zak and the Tiger Temple ~ Audiobook Review & Giveaway

zoe&zak

Zoe and Zak and the Tiger Temple by Lars Guignard
Read by Sonja Field
Genre: Middle Grade Magic, Fantasy Adventure. Ages 8-13

About the Book:
Zoe and Zak have learned some things since their first semester at Moonstock Himalayan Academy in India:

#1 Don't trust the parrots.
#2 Don't eat the food.
#3 And most importantly . . . don't stick around if something crawls out of the lava hole beneath your school.

Last semester, Zoe and Zak returned the first lost Noble Truth to its rightful home. Now, the seventh graders are back in India for their second semester at Moonstock, their boarding school high in the Himalayan mountains where impossible things seem to happen on a regular basis. School kicks off with the Activity Week Challenge in the tiny mountain kingdom of Bhutan where the students must deliver medical supplies. Things take a turn for the worse when Zak becomes deathly ill after an encounter with a strange floating bubble. On returning to Moonstock, Zoe and Zak discover that a creature has come through the lava hole far below their dormitory. When Zoe and Zak follow the creature, they soon learn what they must do. They have been tasked with finding the second lost Noble Truth--the Tiger Eye of Justice. Finding the Tiger Eye sounds like an impossible mission, and it's only made more confusing when Zak discovers that he has been given a powerful gift to help with the task. But Zak's new gift is a double-edged sword, and if Zoe and Zak don't find the Tiger Eye quickly, Zak's time will run out. The Tiger Temple takes Zoe and Zak deep into an exotic world of magical enchantment and heart-pounding action. It promises to be the most thrilling Zoe and Zak adventure yet.

Audio sample is under the cover on the audible page if you want to sample it.

Review

If you've been following us for sometime, then you may remember our review of Zoe and Zak and the Yogi's Curse. If not, you can read it here

Zoe and Zak is an action packed, adventure series for middle grade students ... or even adults such as myself. The series is often compared to the Percy Jackson series. Lars has done a wonderful job at building the characters in the series. I've loved watching them grow and mature ... well, that may be pushing it for Zak! Sonja has the perfect voice that brings you right into the story. Her voice is young and fun loving.

Tim Shoemaker's Below the Surface - Review & Giveaway

Inline image 1

Synopsis

Something is wrong with Cooper. He’s plagued by a fear he doesn’t understand and can’t control. Cooper just wants to escape, and a summer vacation aboard the restored cabin cruiser, The Getaway, with best friends Gordy, Hiro, and Lunk seems like the perfect way to do it. Two weeks of fun—with no mysteries or life-and-death danger. That’s the plan. But their plans are shattered the very first night when they witness a murder. Or did they? Despite their intentions of leaving the investigation to the police, narrow misses and creepy encounters lure them in. Is there really a body floating in the underwater currents of the lake? The closer they get to the truth, the deeper into danger they get. Too late they see the trap. Now each of them must face their own buried fears . . . just below the surface.

REVIEW

Below the Surface is the third book in the Code of Silence series, however, it can easily be read without leaving you totally confused, as I never read either and had no issues following along.

I love the faced paced, action packed, mystery and suspense of Below the Surface. It was not until I was reading reviews and book labels that I discovered that A Code of Silence series is considered Religious Fiction. While there are reference to prayer and Coop not being alone while facing his fears, I don't personally classify Below the Surface as a religious/Christian book.

I have to admit, horror is my preferred genre and I did not see one of the big shockers coming until Hiro blurted it out at the fair. Tim does a good job of building the characters personalities. I feel the ending was a rushed once the tunnel scene has ended. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed Below the Surface and look forward to reading Code of Silence and Back Before Dark.
